Pros

Blue chip name to the public but widely known as conservative and bureaucratic. The grass outside Manulife is greener indeed.

Cons

All those employer branding, empty propaganda of global mobility and growth development etc. Glass ceiling and racial discrimination in Asia regional office unless you are white. Promotion from within is extinct but incumbents will be pushed out.

Pros

CEO is driven, no Manulife history or baggage, comes from faster pace banking environment. Fast mover with a vision and if it goes right, will be an exciting place to work

Cons

Existing management, especially those who have been with Manulife for years. They are not very good at leading staff. Regional office engagement scores in Siem teams are the lowest seen anywhere at any time (think single digits to low double digit scores). Lower pay.

Fake Customer Focus

Pros

Pays well for doing the mundane.

Cons

1. Pretends to be customer focused - we rely on agents selling products at +40% commission to unsuspecting customers. Agent sales is an obsession, not the customers. Pity 80% of the agents leave after 1-2 yrs and most customers are termed ‘orphans’. Yes, we actually use that term. 2. Passive Aggressive culture - anyone who wants to shake the company up is immediately seen negatively by the numerous incumbent veterans, who have heads in the sand about what good looks like. 3. Company doesn’t know how to change and it’s leading to several good people moving on to new companies. 4. Countries have all sorts of issues and risks that are hidden. Company then spends every day fighting over global, regional and local rights. Too exhausting!
