The First 24-tonne Electric Truck in Hong Kong As part of our sustainability strategy, DFI has started electrifying the fleet to reduce our carbon footprint. This month, our first 24-tonne electric truck is on the road to serve our Wellcome stores, enabling us to deliver quality, service and value to our customers more sustainably and eco-friendly. Subsidised by the New Energy Transport Fund of the HKSAR Government, our electric truck is the first-ever 24-tonne electric medium goods vehicle in the Hong Kong retail industry. Manufactured in Europe, it features batteries sufficient for a mileage range of 250km and can be fully charged in less than two hours. With our pledge to reduce half of CO2 emissions by 2030 (Scope 1 and 2 emissions target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative) and achieve net zero by 2050, this electric truck can help save approximately 264,000 litres of diesel over ten years, which leads to around 538 tonnes in emission reduction. We are advancing our sustainability efforts. With IKEA Taiwan's introduction of the first 26-tonne electric truck last year, the addition of this 24-tonne electric truck will exemplify our commitment to greener logistics.
This week we extended a very warm welcome to the second cohort of DFI Students Ambassadors in Hong Kong! Our latest group of over 30 Student Ambassadors has a diverse background from different areas of study, universities and school year levels. The group attended a fun orientation session filled with engaging activities, as they had the opportunity to learn about DFI business and culture, gain first-hand insights from our People & Culture Leaders and teams, meet with fellow SAs, as well as get a preview of the exciting offsite events and learning ahead of them in the programme. In the next few months, our Student Ambassadors will brainstorm and collaborate with each other on their team projects and present their innovative ideas to the DFI teams. Stay tuned on this page to follow their journey with us!
Giant Donates Rice and Oil To Needy Families in Marine Parade On 3 January 2024, Giant Singapore, together with the Minister for Community, Culture and Youth and Second Minister for Law, Edwin Tong SC distributed rice and cooking oil to needy households in the Kembangan-Chai Chee area. Through the donation, we will be benefitting 3,000 needy households. This is all part of the larger ForwardSG Movement for individuals and businesses to work together to give back and support local community needs. We are grateful to be invited to be part of this initiative to not only deliver daily necessities but also engage with the community. We look forward to many more of such activities so that we can make a positive impact in our community. It’s the little things that make a Giant difference!
Congratulations to our team for receiving the Corporate Award (Volunteer Hours) at the Hong Kong Volunteer Award Presentation Ceremony on 3 January. Co-organised by Home and Youth Affairs Bureau, HKSAR Government and the Agency for Volunteer Service 義務工作發展局, the awards recognise contributions and achievements of outstanding volunteers and teams across different sectors. Last week, our top three volunteers with the highest number of volunteering hours, Vivian Tse, Flora Ho, and Chan Wai Chung accepted this prestigious award on behalf of DFI. Working from different functions such as our Store Support Centre and Store & Operations Teams, these team members received their well-deserved recognition for their exceptional volunteer contributions in 2023. At DFI, we believe that through developing a wide range of volunteering activities for our team members' participation, and extending our helping hands to those in need in the community, our collective efforts can make our society a better place for all. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our volunteers who dedicated their valuable time and effort to volunteer, which helps us to continuously promote a culture of volunteerism within DFI. #DFIRetailGroup #Community #DFIVolunteers #WeDoTheRightThing
DFI aims to create value for our communities, prioritising reducing hunger and enhancing well-being. We share our positive progress to benefit the communities in which we operate and beyond. We donate rice to those in need via the “Sik Jor Fan Mei” programme, which means “Have You Eaten Yet?”. Partnering with a local charity, Foodlink Foundation, our supermarket chain Wellcome in Hong Kong, acting as a conduit, donates HK$0.5 for every kilogramme of our Own Brand Yu Pin King rice sold. As of Nov 2023, we have raised over HK$9 million, which is equivalent to 28 million bowls of rice for the community. Following the success of this initiative, we further expanded its reach to Singapore. Working with The Food Bank Singapore, which is a non-profit organisation that provides free meals and dry rations to families in need, we spearheaded the campaign “Chi Fan Le Ma?”, which means “Have You Eaten?”, in August 2022. In Hong Kong, we also launched another charity programme, “Sik Tak Fan La”, meaning “the meal is ready to serve” in September 2022 to provide hot meals to the needy. We donate HK$0.5 for every 7-SELECT meal box sold at 7-Eleven and more than 1.3 million has been raised already. It was enough to supply 52,681 meal boxes and support over three months of food assistance to those in need. With the successful launch of the “Sik Tak Fan La” community programme in Hong Kong, 7-Eleven South China launched similar donation programme in GB Area to help reduce hunger.
DFI Wellcome has won three awards at the prestigious Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence (HKAEE), namely the Super Gold Award, Gold Award in the Shops and Retailers category, and the Outstanding Green Achiever Award. The HKAEE is organized by the Environmental Campaign Committee of the Hong Kong SAR Government, famously known as the "Oscar" in environmental management. The selection process includes rigorous evaluation by impartial judges to identify “best of the best” in the sector. The awardee excels in environmental management and serves as a role model, inspiring others to contribute to a sustainable environment in Hong Kong. Our sustainable development initiatives, including the reduction of carbon emissions from refrigerants, promotion of green energy, and increased waste diversion, have been acknowledged and praised by the professional review panel and the industry. We are delighted to celebrate this recognition alongside our Gold Award in the Shops and Retailers category. DFI Wellcome has been the recipient of the Gold Award at HKAEE for six times in the past decades. This year, we are honored to be the sole recipient of the Super Gold Award 🏆, a special HKAEE 15th Anniversary award, which recognizes our consistent dedication and commitment to sustainability.
DFI Sustainability Month: Cultivating Change Towards Sustainability Sustainability underpins our ESG agenda. Last month, we came together to celebrate our DFI Sustainability Month with a wide array of activities to raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and cultivate a healthy and low-carbon lifestyle. Throughout November, a series of lunch and learn sessions were hosted in Hong Kong and live-streamed to all markets. Team members learned the latest knowledge and ideas about circular economy, low-carbon consumption, waste management, human rights, and more. In Hong Kong, we organised a DIY coffee ground soap-making workshop to promote upcycling by repurposing used coffee grounds. Team members also visited our DFI Refrigeration Research and Development Centre in Chung Hom Kok to understand our commitment to reducing carbon footprint using Water Loop refrigeration technology, which requires much less refrigerants to operate and has a smaller climate impact. Our Singapore team promoted the use of reusable containers and cutlery through a “Bring Your Own Lunch” challenge where team members could get eco-friendly prizes by sharing their lunch photos on WorkJam. Our Indonesia team held a three-day Green Fest with exciting activities, such as a recycling challenge, cycling to work, and tree planting. The culture of sustainability doesn’t end here. We'll continue to implement sustainable practices across our value chains for a better, healthier future.
